If a wombat can’t outrun their predators they are able to put up a fight. When threatened they dive head first in to their burrow. Their rump features a hard, bony plate which helps to prevent damage by predators. Another wombat treated for mange early this morning. We suspect it’s Stu, a wombat treated once last year before he disappeared. One dose Bravecto is not enough so it’s starting from scratch again and hopefully we can give him two follow up doses. Canberra-based wombat rescuer Yolandi Vermaark of Wombat Rescue is on the frontline of fighting mange in wombats. Here, Australian Geographic follows her on one of her typical weekends, which involves looking for joeys in roadkill and treating a small population of wombats with cydectin that helps get rid of mange.
