Can we use linking cubes to teach fractions? Yes! The big idea behind fractions is to form equal groups, and I turned it into a challenge for C. I gave her 12 cubes and challenged her to create 2 equal groups, 3 equal groups, 4 equal groups, 6 equal groups. I use 12 as it’s not too big a number, but it has many factors 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 for children to explore forming equal groups. I recommend starting with 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/6 then 1/12.
