Broadwings over North! Did you catch those large kettles last week? Our transmitted broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) is continuing its southward journey, passing through Pennsylvania with thousands of others as they exit their breeding grounds in the northeast. Let’s check in at the headquarters of The Broad-winged Hawk Project and the first raptor conservation organization, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, which has been counting broadwings and other migrating raptors since 1934. So far, Hawk Moun

Broad-winged hawk migration is passing FAST! Are you keeping up? Our transmitted broadwings (Buteo platypterus) are already pushing through the southeast U.S., where we are checking into the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch in Virginia! This site was established in 1976 by a group of friends who enjoyed birdwatching in their free time and is now one of over 200 hawkwatch sites that participates in sharing migration data on Hawk Migration Association’s hawkcount.org. The peak period for Rockfish Gap has a

Broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus) migration is in full-flight—have you been keeping up? We are tracking the flight of a transmitted broadwing who just passed through New England on their southbound journey. The Harris Center for Conservation Learning has been a key collaborator of Hawk Mountain and The Broad-winged Hawk Project since 2021. The final push of broadwings over Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in New Hampshire marks the first leg (or wing!) of their migration. So far this season

We checked in with three hawkwatches across the Americas to see how their seasons are going! It’s amazing to think that, across such vast distances, we’re all connected through the same raptors soaring overhead! Hawk migration season: Crisp air, open skies, and raptors on the move 🦅🍂 Each fall, hawks take to the skies across North America, and it is a prime time to witness their southward journey. Many species rely on thermal currents, ridge lift, and favorable winds to glide long distances with minimal energy. Some fun facts: 👉 While the peak of broad-winged hawk migration is typically in September, Red-tailed hawks often continue migrating through October and November across much of the U.S. 👉 Haw

An update from Corpus Christi Hawkwatch after their busiest weeks of the season! Due to its prime location along the migration corridor, Corpus Christi receives some of the highest numbers of migrating raptors in North America. Their peak day for broadwings was September 28th, when they counted 250,802 individuals! In addition to broad-winged hawks, Corpus Christi sees astounding numbers of Mississippi kites and turkey vultures as they push out of the United States into Mexico. Hawkwatch Interna

Planning your own "fall migration" for some leaf peeping? Your journey probably won't take you as far as our Bird of the Week! The Swainson's Hawk has the longest migration of any North American raptor. Starting in late August, nearly the entire population of these beautiful buteos migrates in huge flocks called "kettles" from North America south to Argentina and Brazil. On their round trip of more than 12,000 miles, hundreds of thousands can pass by a single site in Mexico in just one day. In t

It’s Trivia Tuesday! 👇🏼 A group of hawks is called a what? During migration season, hawks, like this Broad-winged hawk, will migrate in flocks called "kettles.” These groups can consist of thousands of raptors moving from South America to Central and North America, thinning in numbers as they continue north. This patient (23-6370) was found by a Deerfield Beach citizen unable to fly or lift his/her head. An intake exam showed no obvious injuries and a tail sheath was applied to help prevent fe

We are in the final stretch of the broadwing’s southbound migration! Checking in with our friends at the Talamanca Hawkwatch in Costa Rica, where they are hitting their peak broad-winged hawk (buteo platypterus) numbers for the season. So far, counters have recorded 558,737 broad-winged hawks and 1,522,416 total migrating raptors! The hawkwatch is situated along the coast, where the Talamanca Mountain Range meets the Caribbean Sea. This landscape provides the perfect conditions for raptors to mi

This Broadwing Hawk (22-8624) was brought to the center after flying into a window. Intake exams revealed the Hawk was weak, but had no obvious fractures. After a few days in treatment, this Hawk was moved to one of our raptor mews. This enclosure will give the Hawk more space as it continues to move through the process of rehabilitation. If you find an injured bird, please contact your local wildlife hospital prior to taking action. Our Resource Center is open 7 days a week to address your wild

WATCH: A broad-winged hawk takes a flight test to prepare for release. As we gear up for fall, certain early-migrating raptors are getting ready to fly to different parts of the continent. Some of the earliest migrators are the broad-winged hawks, who leave Minnesota in large groups, called kettles, most often starting in early September. These birds will fly all the way to Central or South America to stay out of the cold throughout the winter months. Their journey is long, and it is important t

Food time? This baby Broad-winged Hawk is ready to let us know he's ready to be fed again! Broad-winged Hawks are small hawks that migrate from Central America to the United States to spend the summer. One interesting phenomenon is how Blue Jays react to the hawks returning--Blue Jays will mimic raptor sounds to scare other birds away from food so they can take it for themselves. When the Broad-winged Hawks leave Virginia Blue Jays stop mimicking them and resume mimicking when the hawks return!

Both timing and location are critical when releasing a juvenile Swainson’s Hawk (SWHA) from a wildlife rehabilitation center because of their migratory behavior. Swainson’s Hawks are long-distance migrants, traveling from North America to their wintering grounds in Argentina, a journey of up to 7,000 miles. Juvenile SWHAs learn to migrate by instinct, but they also rely on environmental cues and follow large groups of other hawks, called “kettles.” These kettles can include hundreds or even thou
