We spent the day up at Sue's, our wild wombat sanctuary, getting prepared for a large hay delivery. We were home a little later than usual and Pinger was so excited to see us! We raised Pinger from a tiny orphan 6 years ago. She lives out in the sanctuary but still spends most of her waking hours with us. She is one of the first wombats to come in every night. Another wombat treated for mange early this morning. We suspect it’s Stu, a wombat treated once last year before he disappeared. One dose Bravecto is not enough so it’s starting from scratch again and hopefully we can give him two follow up doses. Lucky for him he has most of the fur on his back but his front legs and torso is covered in thick plaques If you want to support us in helping them please do. It costs us an average of $250 per wombat for treatment. You can donate at www.wombatrescue.c

Canberra-based wombat rescuer Yolandi Vermaark of Wombat Rescue is on the frontline of fighting mange in wombats. Here, Australian Geographic follows her on one of her typical weekends, which involves looking for joeys in roadkill and treating a small population of wombats with cydectin that helps get rid of mange. It's a hard story to watch, but Yolandi believes all Australians need to open their eyes to the incredible suffering wombats with mange endure. | Australian Geographic

So many of my rescued wombats choose to sleep in my bed, or as close to me as they possibly can. Curled up in my arms, tucked behind my legs, pressed up against my back — wherever they feel safest. These babies have lost everything. Their mums, their homes, their sense of security. Wanting to be close isn’t spoiling them — it’s healing them. I’ve been sleep deprived for decades. Nights are long and space is limited. But if my presence helps mend their little hearts, helps them feel safe enough t

I've been getting frustrated because now that I live alone, I don't have anyone to help me film all the things we do with our sweet babies. But, this is how I spend my nights 🥰 I start bottle feeding at 4pm and finish just after midnight. I have the same rounds first thing in the morning minus Sue and Flossy's milk and meds. Daisy is patiently waiting for Isla to finish, Wardu wants to cut the line and Winnie is sleeping off her botty. This is heaven to me ♥️ | Wombat Awareness Organisation

Today is the day lovelies! The sun is shining, Flossy has returned from her burrows and all of our visits for a slow transition have helped the girls feel comfortable and like they are at home already. We still have hundreds of things to do but it will be much easier once I am there. Our new sanctuary is safe, functional and ready to be a dream home for all wombats to follow. Although it's still very dry, seasonal rain has arrived and the sanctuary is transforming from a dust bowl to an ocean of

Ok lovelies, I've had a lot of trouble writing this post because it's a complicated situation. Firstly, I want to let you know that Ruby is going well. She isn't standing, walking or eating great, but, she is very responsive, very loving and affectionate, very comfortable and slowly improving! She needs x-rays but is too weak so we are solely concentrating on building her strength and helping her fight an infection somewhere in her mouth or sinuses until she is stronger. What is worrying me is,

I was worried that I may get a little lonely out here by myself. Some weeks, I'll only talk to three people and I don't even notice! Because day and night, my arms and heart are filled with these cuddly little babies. There's never any room on the lounge, there's always someone at my feet and I have no need for any artificial entertainment because I have all this wholesome goodness right here. Animals and their companionship should never be underrated ❤️ | Wombat Awareness Organisation

I'm really tired tonight and can't think of anything to say. But Winnie just crawled up onto my lap for this delightful cuddle and I had to show you her and just how beautiful she is. Today someone commented on one of my posts telling me I need to stop portraying wombats as sweet - they are nasty and aggressive animals. We missed that memo? 🤷♀️ #WombatWhispers #RescueWithLove #kindnessmatters | Wombat Awareness Organisation

Today was doing work far away from Canberra. This sweet girl is about 1.5 hours away The first time I treated her she was grazing out and about and ran to her burrow. But when the rain started the landowner let me know she moved into the outside laundry Asking me what they should do I said well if you’re happy for her to shelter there for a while you can perhaps put an old mattress out. Her burrow is likely flooded and with mange and so much hairloss she would be cold The landowner went above an

Connie has been sleeping and eating, only getting up for 15 minutes every second day. That was until 4am this morning when she decided it was time to party 🥳 I got up and locked my wombat door so she could get her beans out inside. When it went quiet, I assumed she tucked herself into bed. When I woke up this morning, I saw the door was broken and Connie was nowhere to be seen inside but I heard some rummaging at the back door and she was trying to work out how to get back in! She had dirt all

HOW TO PUT A WOMBAT TO SLEEP 😴 🐾 🤣 Keeper Gabbi, (the Wombat Whisperer) shows us how she gets Dinkum ready for a big nap! Disclaimer: Keeper Gabbi is a trained professional who has raised Dinkum since he was young, we share these videos to showcase the incredible animals and personalities on display here at the Shoalhaven Zoo. We DO NOT recommend performing these actions with wild wombats, as they can be aggressive and territorial. Always respect our wildlife! 💚 #discoveryourwildside #wombat

Most nights, for more than 15 years, I have spent my time, sometimes into the early hours of the morning sitting out in the sanctuary with babies that are either making the transition into the sanctuary or are too unwell to be left alone with all of the silly buggers. I never get lonely or bored as I always have plenty of company 😃 I am finding it harder to crawl through bushes though as I am getting older 😅 One day, I hope we have plenty of peeps to help care for these babies 🙏 Joy, Sue and

Does life get any better for a wombat ? I don’t think so Taj came into our care after living in a dark box 24/7 - that’s no sunlight, no dirt and with minimal food as he was underweight… Now he spends his days down burrows, teasing Wardoo, Serena and maxi who live next door to him, and with plenty of natural sunlight, grasses and food. Taj loves attention from his humans and runs around like a bulldozer to show off. We are now getting plenty of rain here so it’s getting quite wet YAY Thanks for

Miss Willow is growing. She looks like a little wombat now.. not a pinkie anymore. She is just over 800g and her new carers will start visiting to bond with her and I can teach how to bottle feed and care. Doing the required wombat courses are good but you do need hands on training as they need specialised care. That will make the transition much easier for Willow and her new parents, if everyone is comfortable and happy. She is a delightful little girl and I know she will be loved. If feeding t

Wombat Liam is still with us but critically ill. His pneumonia is the worst Ive seen with bubbles coming out of his nose last night. It’s not looking good but he is taking fluids and on two courses of very strong antibiotics. He is warm and comfortable and we just need to let the medicine do its thing. If you see any out of the ordinary behaviour like Liam did, sleeping out in the open on a footpath, you can bet your boots something is very wrong as they don’t act that out of character for no re

The plot thickens with Holly’s story. She is displaying the worst trauma response i have ever seen. Much worse than Bugs who were badly attacked by another wombat. We have been told about a small wombat living in a drain pipe but very elusive a few months ago. About 100m from where Holly was ultimately found. We suspect it might have been her. Which means she was on her own as a baby for months, fending for herself and not having mum to protect her and snuggle up to when sleeping. After one week

Wombat carers typically do whatever they can to make their wombats as comfortable as possible. It is not always easy as they require such specialist care. We built this burrow a while ago but noticed that the level was high and the boys weren't digging it out. It seems a lot of soil seeped in through the holes in the side (these are trench-liners) and they have flooded a few times. So we rebuilt them. Better. We covered the holes, made it deeper and at the end installed an igloo kennel that will

He’s doing awesome 💪 Out for a bit of exercise, but at this age, when they’re out of the pouch, baby wombats are still extremely dependent on staying close to their mum. In the wild they’ll stick right to her feet, darting in and out of her legs for safety. That’s exactly what Tambo’s doing with Mum today. When she stops walking, he pauses. When he h
