Floods devastate North Shore, recovery efforts underway
State and federal leaders are mobilizing resources after devastating floods caused widespread destruction across the state, with some of the hardest hit areas on the North Shore.
Oahu's North Shore community is coming together to rebuild and restore what was lost during the catastrophic flooding.
At several locations, community members set up distribution sites offering free food, water, and cleaning supplies to those affected.
The visuals were stunning early Friday morning as residents began posting on social media to alert about the catastrophic flooding on Oahu’s North Shore. “The worst flood I’ve ever seen,” North Shore State House Representative Sean Quinlan said.
Emergency flash flood alert extended on Oʻahu to the north half of the island at 8 a.m., southern half at 10:30 a.m. Wahiawā Dam could fail.
As the waters rose Friday, officials warned that the 120-year-old Wahiawa dam, north of Honolulu, was “at risk of imminent failure.” The dam has long been vulnerable, but worries eased as the water subsided.
Gov. Josh Green said conditions on Oahu’s North Shore were “very serious” early Friday as heavy rain triggered rapid flooding, prompted evacuations, and led to multiple rescues.
"What we saw today underscores just how devastating this storm has been for our North Shore communities."
