Song, 36, previously showcased her storytelling skills with romance films in her Oscar-nominated feature debut Past Lives. In her latest film Materialists, starring Chris Evans , Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson, the writer-director nailed budding chemistry and comedy.

A sequel to Julia Roberts ’ romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding is in early development. It’s been reported that Past Lives and Materialists filmmaker Celine Song will write the screenplay for the project, but she is not in talks to direct it.

My Best Friend’s Wedding grossed nearly $300 million worldwide. It received three Golden Globe nominations — for best musical and comedy, as well as acting honours for Roberts and Everett — and has remained one of Roberts' most popular romantic comedy films from the 1990s.
