The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C., on Sunday announced that 49-year-old Mario Bustamante Leiva has been arrested and charged in connection to the recent theft of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem's bag.

"On Saturday, April 26, 2025, members of the Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Secret Service located and arrested 49-year-old Mario Bustamante Leiva," the MPD told Newsweek. "Leiva was charged with two counts of Robbery (Stealth). He faces additional charges for an offense being investigated by the United States Secret Service."

Prosecutors filed federal robbery and wire fraud charges Monday against the man accused of stealing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse at a restaurant in downtown Washington, D.C.
