Hawaii KÄ«lauea Summit Eruption
This video, taken from the west rim of Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera), in the closed area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, shows the new eruption that started on the morning of December 23, 2024, at 2:20 a.
KÄ«lauea summit eruption pauses for third time
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that activity stopped at about 8:40 p.m. Friday, putting the eruption that started during the early morning of Dec. 23 on pause for a third time. There is no lava draining back into the southern vent, which was the only vent actively erupting at the same time.
KÄ«lauea summit eruption remains paused, but glow from lava lake persists
There was no visible flow of lava back into the vent after the pause, and the gradual drop in lava level is more likely because of loss of gas bubbles — summit lavas are 50% or more bubbles — or very slow leaking of lava into the vent beneath the crust.
KÄ«lauea summit erupts again
KÄ«lauea began erupting again on December 26, 2024. This is the eighth eruption of KÄ«lauea, and the sixth within Kaluapele, since 2020. These previous eruptions within Kaluapele lasted from less than one week to more than a year in duration.
Update: KÄ«lauea eruption appears to be paused
Update at 5:57 p.m. Dec. 23: Just as suddenly as it started, the new summit eruption of KÄ«lauea volcano on the Big Island slowed significantly between 3 and 4 p.m. today and appears to be paused.
