In his March 1 executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, President Trump asserts that a single shared language is “at the core of a unified, cohesive society,” that it serves to “streamline communication,” promote efficiency and “empower new citizens to achieve the American Dream.”
President Donald Trump will reportedly sign an executive order on Friday formalizing English as the official language of the United States. While most U.S. residents speak English, it has never before been formally established as the American language.
The order did not require changes to federal programs but was a victory for America’s English-only movement, which has ties to efforts to restrict immigration and bilingual education.
