President-elect Trump said Tuesday he wanted to create an “External Revenue Service” to collect tariffs and other revenue from foreign countries, comparing it to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which collects taxes from Americans.

Trump announced his intention to create the new federal department on Truth Social, writing: "I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources. We will begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALLY, their fair share."

Trump said his new "external revenue service" will go into effect on January 20 to help the US collect more revenue from foreign countries.

Trump, 78, has already warned that he will raise tariffs on foreign nations that fail to align with his strict immigration policies.
