The Legacy on Ice benefit event, featuring U.S. figure skating stars, payed tribute to the 67 people who died in the Washington, D.C., plane crash on Jan. 29.

Little more than a month after a tragic air disaster took the lives of 28 members of the US figure skating community, emotions were on full display Sunday in Washington, DC, for the “Legacy on Ice” tribute.

Some of figure skating’s most legendary names from the past and present headlined a special two-hour benefit event on Sunday called “Legacy on Ice,” honoring the 28 members lost in the devastating plane crash in Washington,

Figure skater Maxim Naumov, who lost his parents in January’s DC plane crash, was overcome with emotion after performing a routine in their honor

At the end of his figure skating performance, when the last note of his parents’ favorite song played in an arena packed with spectators and heavy with sorrow, Maxim Naumov dropped to his knees at the center of the ice. He remained there for what seemed like forever, awash in a spotlight, looking lost and sobbing.

Dzens of U.S. figure skaters descended on the District this weekend: to honor the coaches, skaters and family members they lost in January’s American Airlines crash outside Reagan National Airport.

The Washington, D.C., event honored the 67 victims of the Jan. 29 crash, including six from the Skating Club of Boston.

Among those lending star power to the tribute/fundraiser are 1988 Olympic champion Brian Boitano and 1992 Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi.

The Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning will honor the victims of the DCA plane crash, one month to the day of the horrific accident.
