Dozens of U.S. ice cream manufacturers are pledging to eliminate the use of artificial food colors from their ice cream products made with real milk by the end of 2027.
The International Dairy Foods Association and major U.S. ice cream brands have pledged to remove artificial colors like Red 40 and Yellow 5 from real-milk ice cream by the end of 2027.
Companies were not named but International Dairy Foods Assn. says they represent ‘more than 90% of the ice cream’; Consumer Brands also works to end colors in school foods.
Major U.S. ice cream brands, covering over 90% of the market, agreed to eliminate artificial colors in response to Trump’s MAHA initiative, signaling a broader push for healthier food policies.
The announcement to eliminate artificial dyes comes less than a week before the National Ice Cream Day on July 20.
The average American gobbles down about 19 pounds of ice cream a year, according to the industry. Confessing that ice cream is his favorite food, Mr. Kennedy said the initiative does not apply to products made with non-dairy ingredients or those made in-house by small ice cream shops or restaurants.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins spoke about cooperation between the Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services to remove artificial colors from ice cream products.
Under this effort, dozens of U.S. ice cream companies have pledged to remove certified artificial colors Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 from their ice cream and frozen dairy dessert products by 2028. The commitment encompasses companies producing more than 90% of the ice cream volume sold in the United States.
