While VJ Edgecombe’s historic debut is deservedly getting plenty of praise, the Sixers weren’t edging out the Celtics without the 40 points from their ‘veteran’ point guard.

Tyrese Maxey poured in 22 points in the first half of the 76ers’ season opener against the Celtics, while shooting 100 percent from the three-point line. He also put up two rebounds, three assists and one steal while shooting 62 percent from the field.

Anthony Edwards led the way for that group with 41 points. He took the most shots of the quartet, knocking down 14-for-28 from the floor (along with all eight of his foul shots, the only 100% at the line of the four). The Minnesota Timberwolves pulled out a close win.

Meanwhile, the rookie's teammates raved about his record-setting night and the cool, calm approach he took to his first NBA game.

Tyrese Maxey was forced to step up last year for the 76ers, and he is up for the challenge of an even bigger role this season.

Edgecombe gave the Sixers a three-point lead by converting two free throws with 14.1 seconds left. He went 0 for 2 on his next trip to the foul line, keeping the door open for a Celtics game-winner, but the Sixers got the stop to ensure his fantastic debut was victorious.
