Erin strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Friday morning east of the Caribbean Islands and is expected to keep strengthening through the weekend.
As of 9 a.m., a well-defined area of low pressure, designated as Invest 97-L, is located in the Eastern Atlantic near the coast of Africa. This system is moving westward at 15 to 20 mph and is forecast to strengthen over the coming days.
