Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey is set to have her first appearance in federal court on assault charges stemming from immigration officials’ attempt to arrest the Newark mayor outside a detention facility.

At the same time, interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced that her office was dismissing a misdemeanor case brought against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver is charged with assaulting two officers in clash at New Jersey ICE detention center, a highly unusual move by the Justice Department.

Democrats have denounced the charges as politically motivated and an effort by the Trump administration to intimidate member of Congress and chill oversight.

The Democrats clashed with Homeland Security agents while visiting the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark.
